Jason didn’t die in The Burning Maze but he was really close to dying. He spent months in a coma and had lots of surgeries and his heart stop beating for a little bit but he was brought back. He woke up on June 30 and he celebrated his 17th birthday in the hospital in New Rome surrounded by the rest of the seven and his cohort friends.
He and Piper had a heart to heart conversation, they agree that while they love each other, they need a time apart romantically to figure things out but they agreed each other is the other’s best friend and they are going to be only one call away.
Jason ended up settling in New Rome for the summer but for the school year (he had to retake his junior year) he was in a boarding school in San Francisco, without Piper in LA and with reminders of how he almost died there…he wasn’t a fan of SoCal anymore.
His boarding school was actually not that far from the Chase house, something he realized when Annabeth had a breakdown, dropped out of Berkeley and went to live with her father and a very panicked Percy Jackson called Jason almost in tears begging him to check on Annabeth.
Annabeth was not well and that was a fact, Jason ended up spending a lot of afternoons at the Chase house helping distracting Annabeth with his sketchbooks and models while Annabeth helping him fix his mistakes and helping him get better with his work.
Annabeth and Jason bonding over their past and being raised in a camp. Annabeth and Jason bonding over Piper because she is their best friend. Jason loving Annabeth’s stories about Thalia.
Jason and Annabeth looking alike and most often than not people confused them as twins/siblings and after a while, they started playing along.
“You know, Grace? Your sister kind of adopted me one time and since you are still 17 and I’m 18, I can technically adopt you.”
Jason discovering he really liked architecture and Annabeth convincing him to join her in Cornell. “You can hang out with me and Percy! And since I’m going to be one year ahead of you I can give a lot of advice! Plus we can keep working on your sketches when we have free time.”
Annabeth and Jason going to museums together, or to parks to sit down and sketch, they know each other’s coffee orders by heart.
Jason realizing that while Thalia was his sister and he loved her with all his heart, Annabeth was starting to feel a lot like another sister to him.
Jason actually going to Cornell with Annabeth (and in a way Percy since he was in Ithaca) to study architecture.
Jason and Percy bonding and Percy adopting Jason like the cousin he never had. (‘Well, your sister technically had that job but then she quit but is okay because now I have you.”)
Jason spending more time in Annabeth and Percy’s apartment than in his own dorm.
Jason dating people in college, while Piper would always have a big part of his heart, he knew she had also been dating around and Jason really wanted to go out with that boy from his Latin class. Jason dating around in college and enjoying it.
Jason asking Annabeth and Percy for dating advice but they only stare at him before saying. “You really don’t want advice from us, it took us a year to kiss again after our first kiss and that pretty much sums out why you shouldn’t ask us for advice.”
He still has a group chat with Leo and Piper and while they talk often, he still misses them so much. They try to see each other at least twice a year and it never feels enough, they hang out mostly during the summer when they visit camp, he has friends and he is really close to Percy and Annabeth but no one will ever be able to replace the love he has for Piper and Leo.
Annabeth and Percy graduated one year before him and moved back to New York, Jason can’t deny he misses them terribly. He misses pulling all-nighters with Annabeth and going to Percy’s swim competitions or having dinner with Percy.
Piper and Leo went to his graduation ceremony, Percy took a picture of the three of them crying and hugging, Jason has framed it on his night table.
Piper and he shared a chaste kiss and while it would be years until they get back together, that kiss was something really special for him.
Leo moving with Jason in a crappy apartment in NYC and Jason having his best friend back, Piper visiting them almost monthly, the trio was back again and it was like if nothing had changed (except for Jason and Piper not being together but it’s okay because even there they were still really close)
Annabeth choosing him as her right hand when she was given the task of creating Half-Blood Town, Jason spending a lot of time with Annabeth and Leo while building Half-Blood Town.
Piper and Jason spent the whole night of Percy and Annabeth’s wedding dancing together and he was sure he could feel something switch between them and after that, they started hanging out more often and often and often. When they broke up almost 7 years ago Piper had told him that no matter what he was her person and 7 years later it was still true, no one in his life got him like Piper did and he was sure the feeling was mutual.
While Piper and Jason had grown back together, it still took them 2 more years until they got back together.
It happened when the seven were celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their quest in Disney World, they were there for a week and a half and every day was magical.
In one of the last days, Piper had wanted to go back to the Magic Kingdom while the other wanted to go to different parks, Jason ended up going with Piper. Piper hold his hand during the drop in Splash Mountain and for the rest of the day, they didn’t let go of each other’s hand.
It was during the fireworks when they finally kissed but before the kiss they shared a look of understatement: it took them 9 years, a heartbreak and a breakup, almost dying, being apart for years, dating other people, falling for other people and having their heart broken, time to understand who they are without the burden of the end of the world in the shoulders but now they were here, face to face, they found their way back to each other and when their lips met, they know this time was gonna be forever.
And the fact the firework show was called Happily Ever After was absolutely a coincidence.

The thing about Jason Mendoza in the good place is that he’s the only character on the show with any emotional intelligence, like, period.

The others might all be smart in their own ways and him really, really uneducated (i’d call him stupid, but after the vague jokes about his schooling i think this is meant to be commentary on how him not being fortunate enough to be given a good education contributed to him ending up in the bad place) but, he’s actually really, really emotionally intelligent!

He helps the others sort through their own emotional baggage without seeming to even realise he’s doing it, and he picks up on it and confronts Tahani on her bad behaviour against him. He didn’t have the book smarts at the time to label exactly what it was that she was doing that was unfair to him, but he Did know she was being out of line. He’s also, in general, a kind human being, he’s not cruel or mean like any of the others, he may be self-centered at times, but never mean (which Eleanor and Tahani can definitely be).

The other three humans, plus Janet and Michael, have no clue about emotions! The blanket statement that Jason is stupid in all areas is flawed, because if we stopped measuring that standard by book smarts or street smarts, Jason would leave them in the dust because he’s actually in touch with his own and others’ emotions, and they genuinely need his emotional compass to move forward imo.
